For the Record …

“Joseph D’Agostino, spokesman for the Population Research Institute — the organization which first exposed the horrors of China’s coercive population program — commented, ‘It really shows that some people don’t care about human rights.’

“D’Agostino told LifeSiteNews.com, ‘These governments make noises about human rights but they obviously don’t care about them because there is no doubt UNFPA supports China’s coercive population program which includes forced abortion and sterilization. In some cases women are imprisoned and fined and their husbands are subjected to the same treatment. The fact that Western governments continue, even if indirectly, to fund China’s coercive program, is unbelievable.’

“D’Agostino noted that the news about China’s forced abortions is widespread and was as recently as September reported in Time magazine.

“D’Agostino concluded, ‘Why don’t these governments demand at least an easing of the coercive measures? Why is the money always given no strings attached?’”

“‘No one who believes in the rule of law or republican self-government could possibly object to the overturning of Roe v. Wade,’ said Joseph A. D’Agostino, Vice President for Communications with the Population Research Institute. ‘Judge Alito’s opponents oppose him primarily because he just might vote to take abortion regulation out of the hands of federal judges and return it to state legislatures. We thank Sen. Specter for his excellent performance as chairman of Judge Alito’s hearings and look forward to a rapid confirmation vote on the Senate floor, without obstructive filibustering from Democrats who can’t muster a majority to stop him any more than they can muster a democratic majority for the abortion-on-demand regime imposed on America by Roe.’”

“‘Emboldened by ties to the Bush Administration, U.S. conservatives step up activities overseas.’ That was the headline on an Associated Press story last weekend detailing how right-wing advocacy groups, backed by a reactionary administration, are increasing their efforts to instill their values of ignorance, intolerance and conformity on poor nations.

“The groups are shunning the United Nations and Western Europe, areas they say are lost to liberal tendencies. There’s a telling quote from Joseph D’Agostino of the Population Research Institute: ‘With the Bush Administration, pro-lifers feel there’s a real opportunity to stop the U.S. government from promoting abortion and sex education and population control in the Third World.’”

“The AP/Seattle Post-Intelligencer on Saturday examined U.S.-based antiabortion groups’ increasing overseas advocacy work, such as opposition to family-planning legislation and funding in developing countries (Crary, AP/Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 1/14). The following are examples of recent work by U.S. antiabortion groups overseas:

  • “Population Research Institute, a Virginia-based antiabortion group, registered a complaint with the U.S. Agency for International Development, alleging that two groups in Peru had improperly used U.S. funding to promote emergency contraception. Both groups received warnings, and one group will have to return some of the funding.

  • “PRI provided assistance to conservatives in Colombia — which is one of three countries in Latin America that prohibit all abortions — by supporting a countrywide ban on abortions.

  • “Several U.S. groups assisted conservatives in the Philippines by opposing family-planning legislation that would include increased sex education and access to birth control, as well as give financial incentives to those families that limit themselves to having only two children (AP/Miami Herald, 1/15).

“Comments: ‘[W]ith the Bush Administration, pro-lifers feel there’s a real opportunity to stop the U.S. government from promoting abortion and sex education and population control in the Third World,’ Joseph D’Agostino of PRI said.”
