PRI in the Media
The Deadly Legacy of “Overpopulation”: PRI President Steven Mosher was featured in EWTN News reflecting on the legacy of population-control advocate Paul Ehrlich. Mr. Mosher sharply criticized Ehrlich as a “false prophet of the worst kind,” arguing his ideas helped justify coercive population control policies that led to the deaths of hundreds of millions, including an estimated 400 million under China’s one-child policy. He also noted Ehrlich’s failed predictions of mass starvation, pointing out that these ideas directly contributed to today’s global birth decline.
Pachamama Controversy Resurfaces: This week, Mr. Mosher’s article was published by LifeSiteNews, addressing renewed controversy over images of Pope Leo XIV participating in a Pachamama ritual. He argues that Catholic clergy should reject—not engage in—pagan practices, pointing to similar events during the 2019 Amazon Synod under Pope Francis. Drawing on historical precedent, he emphasizes that the Church once destroyed idols, not accommodated them, warning that such actions risk blurring the line between Christian worship and pagan ritual.
Abortion Pill Spreads Global Harm: Recently, Family Life International republished Mr. Mosher and PRI team member Chiara McKenna’s collaborative piece highlighting the global dangers of the abortion pill. Drawing on U.S. data showing complication rates near 11%, the article warns risks are likely far higher in developing countries with limited medical care. With an estimated 36 million chemical abortions annually worldwide, even a 1-in-10 complication rate could leave 3.6 million women facing serious harm, often without treatment.
Deepening Depopulation
Japan Moves to Make Birth Free: Japan is moving to fully cover childbirth costs under its public insurance health system as births fall for the 10th straight year. In 2025, births dropped below 710,000. Despite spending over $20 billion annually on pro-natal policies, the crisis has deepened. Current subsidies of 500,000 yen ($3,130) often fall short of average delivery costs, especially in Tokyo. Officials hope the reform, targeted for rollout by 2028, will ease financial burdens and encourage more babies.
American Men Still Want Marriage: A new survey of 2,000 American men ages 18–29 challenges the narrative that young men are apathetic. While 59% are not in relationships, 74% are open to dating, 68% desire marriage, and 62% hope to become fathers. Yet many face economic and social barriers: only 41% hold college degrees, and fewer than half feel they’ve reached adulthood. Still, 89% say manhood requires sacrifice, and 85% value responsibility—revealing not indifference, but frustrated aspirations.
“Most, although not all, of the problems that young men are experiencing are economic in nature,” says Mr. Mosher. “Rebuilding America’s industrial base will go a long way towards ensuring that young men have the financial wherewithal to build a secure future that includes marriage and children. Most still aspire to this but fear it is financially out of reach.”
Communist China
China Targets Christian Lawyers: China’s crackdown on independent Christianity is intensifying, with their latest efforts now targeting not only pastors and congregations but also the lawyers who defend them. In recent months, around 20 attorneys linked to Beijing’s Zion Church have faced license revocations, suspensions, surveillance, and threats—some even directed at their families. One lawyer warned that authorities are using “secret police tactics” to silence legal defense. The campaign reflects a broader strategy to deny religious freedom.
UN Misdeeds
UN Urged to End Surrogacy: The Holy See is urging the UN to abolish surrogacy “in all its forms,” warning that global demand now exceeds supply and risks increasing coercion of vulnerable women. Archbishop Gabriele Caccia cautioned that law and ethics are lagging behind this rapidly expanding practice. He emphasized that surrogacy exploits women—often driven by financial need—and reduces babies to commodities, calling for stronger global protections to uphold the dignity of both mothers and their children.
Science Gone Mad
IVF Meets Artificial Intelligence: As IVF costs continue to rise—averaging over $61,377 per live birth—new efforts are turning to artificial intelligence to make the process more “efficient.” A recent NBC News segment highlights how AI is being used to predict IVF outcomes, select embryos, and guide hormone treatments. This trend raises serious ethical concerns about the growing role of technology in reproduction, further commodifying human life by reducing children to calculated probabilities with a price tag.

Pro-Life Around the World
Scotland Rejects Assisted Suicide: Scotland’s Parliament has rejected an assisted suicide bill by a decisive 69–57 vote, following two years of intense national debate. Lawmakers across parties warned the proposal lacked safeguards against coercion and failed to protect vulnerable patients and medical professionals. Concerns also centered on inadequate end-of-life care, with over 14,000 Scots reportedly dying each year without proper palliative support. The vote is a major victory for life, likely settling the issue in Scotland for a generation.
Morocco’s Abortion Pills Problem: Moroccan authorities are raising alarms over a growing black-market trade in abortion pills, following the arrest of three men in Marrakech for selling smuggled drugs online. Health officials warn these unregulated pills bypass safety protections, putting women at serious risk while ending the lives of unborn children. Medical leaders have called the trend “deeply concerning,” as it undermines both public health and integrity in the medical system—highlighting the human cost of expanding access to dangerous, illicit abortion drugs.
Pro-Life on the Home Front
South Dakota Signs Pro-Life Bills: South Dakota Governor Rhoden has signed three pro-life bills into law, reinforcing the state’s strong stance on protecting unborn life. HB 1274 targets the illegal distribution and advertising of abortion pills, empowering the Attorney General to prosecute violations. Additional measures clarify that miscarriage care and ectopic pregnancy are not abortions and expand education on prenatal development. State leaders say the legislation strengthens protections for both mothers and their unborn children while pushing back against the spread of abortion drugs.
DOJ Delays Abortion Pill Lawsuits: The Trump administration’s Department of Justice is seeking to pause multiple lawsuits challenging the FDA’s approval and expansion of the abortion pill mifepristone, arguing courts should wait for an ongoing agency review. The delays will prolong harm, citing data showing more than 1 in 10 women who take mifepristone experience serious complications. Meanwhile, attorneys estimate that each month of inaction could result in nearly 1,000 unborn lives lost in Louisiana alone, along with hundreds of emergency room visits tied to the drug.
Ohio Advances Waiting Period for Abortions: Ohio lawmakers are advancing new abortion restrictions, as a House committee approved a bill requiring a 24-hour waiting period by a 9–3 vote. The measure requires in-person informed consent at least a day before an abortion and establishes civil penalties for noncompliant physicians. The bill will ensure women are fully informed. The bill will now head toward the Ohio House for a full vote, before moving on to the Ohio Senate for consideration.
“Waiting periods are essential for several reasons,” says Mr. Mosher. “They provide time for the pregnant mom to be informed about abortion alternatives, from adopting to the abortion reversal pill, ensuring that she enjoys true informed consent about what is about to be done to her and to her unborn child.”
Good News
Mexico State Establishes Day of the Unborn: In a pro-life victory, Mexico’s state of Aguascalientes has established March 25 as the “Day of the Unborn Girl and Boy,” becoming the first state to formally recognize unborn children in this way. The measure, passed March 19, promotes prenatal care, maternal nutrition, and shared family responsibility. Lawmakers emphasized the initiative as a concrete public policy supporting both mothers and children, highlighting the dignity of life and the need for compassionate support for women facing difficult pregnancies.
PRI Research & Resources
Manual Vacuum Aspirators Exposed: This week, we highlight our factsheet on manual vacuum aspirators (MVAs), a widely used abortion device promoted as “safe and efficacious” despite serious risks. MVAs use a hand-powered suction device to empty the uterus, removing the developing child and surrounding uterine tissue. Vacuum aspiration, both electric and manual, account for about 97% of first-trimester surgical abortions in the U.S. Though some models are approved for reuse up to 25 times, reports show devices reused far more—up to 500 times in India—raising infection risks. The factsheet also documents their widespread promotion, particularly in developing countries.
