PRI in the Media
On The World Over: PRI President Steven Mosher recently appeared on The World Over with Raymond Arroyo. The broadcast covered President Trump’s newly imposed reciprocal tariffs on China, the growing threat to Taiwan, and the broader destabilizing effects of Chinese Communist Party policy around the world. Mosher offered a critical analysis of these developments and their implications for U.S. foreign policy, global trade, and international religious freedom. A former human rights investigator in China, Mosher had long sounded the alarm on the CCP’s human rights abuses and ongoing conflict with the West. Drawing on decades of firsthand experience and scholarly research, he helped viewers understand what was really at stake. This timely and urgent conversation shed light on the dangers posed by Communist China and the importance of defending the values of life, liberty, and faith.
Discussing Sex Selective Abortion: Mr. Mosher recently appeared on Straight Talk on Life Issues with host Brad Mattes, co-host Victor Nieves, and fellow guest Reggie Littlejohn, to discuss sex selective abortion. Sex selection abortion is both a national and international issue. Within the U.S., certain minority populations continue to have skewed gender ratios, as son preference persists for at least two generations after immigration. Over the years, Mr. Mosher has fought for a federal ban against sex selective abortion in the U.S., which unfortunately our nation does not have in place. Internationally, China, India, and certain parts of the Balkans all remain hotspots for sex selective abortion.
The Devils in the Details: Chronicles Magazine has released its comprehensive review of Mr. Mosher’s latest book, The Devil and Communist China. Here’s just part of this in-depth review:
“Steven W. Mosher’s excellent book, The Devil and Communist China, outlines the truth about the Chinese regime and deserves great attention not merely from a historical point of view but also from a religious one. He focuses mostly on Communism in China, and the millions of deaths this authoritarian regime has brought about, especially under Chairman Mao. Mosher’s approach to tackling such a vast subject is interesting and engaging. It is partly a biography of Mao Zedong, and partly a history of China and the development of Communism. It’s also a memoir of Mosher’s own experience with the country’s barbaric offenses against human dignity.”

The CCP’s Financial Corruption: In his latest New York Post article, Mr. Mosher exposes the massive wealth accumulated by China’s Communist elite, despite their claims of representing a classless society. Drawing from an unclassified U.S. intelligence report revealed by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, Mosher outlines widespread corruption among top CCP leaders, including secret real estate deals, business ventures, and foreign assets held by families of figures like Xi Jinping and Wen Jiabao. He notes that roughly $2 trillion—one out of every six dollars spent in China—ends up enriching party officials. Mosher also points out that this hidden wealth, stashed in offshore accounts and luxury properties, could be targeted with sanctions if the CCP escalates its aggression, particularly toward Taiwan.
“With the publication of this report, China’s political oligarchs now know that the Trump administration will impose the same costs on them that were imposed on the Russian oligarchs who supported Vadimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine,” says Mr. Mosher. “Unless China’s oligarchs want to see their overseas holdings similarly disappear, they will restrain Xi Jinping’s more aggressive impulses, toward Taiwan, for example.”
Deepening Depopulation
The Birth Dearth: Elon Musk, now leading President Trump’s new Department of Government Efficiency, has stirred headlines not just for slashing bureaucracy but for sounding the alarm on a far deeper crisis: humanity’s collapsing birth rate. Despite his success with companies like SpaceX, Tesla, and OpenAI, Musk says what keeps him up at night is the “birth dearth” threatening civilization’s future. His concern is well-founded—the U.S. fertility rate has plummeted in recent years, now sitting well below replacement level at just under 1.8 births per woman. And America isn’t alone. A total of 96 countries—half the world—now face the same demographic decline, with South Korea’s fertility rate the lowest of all.

New Religious Regulations: New regulations issued by the National Religious Affairs Administration, set to take effect on May 1st, will further tighten the Chinese Communist Party’s grip on religious activity by foreigners in China. The 38-article directive mandates that all non-Chinese individuals seeking to practice their faith must first obtain government approval and strictly follow Party guidelines. These rules significantly advance Xi Jinping’s agenda of “sinicization,” aiming not for true cultural integration but for absolute Party control over all religious expression. In practice, no religious activity—whether in churches, mosques, or temples—is permitted unless sanctioned by the regime.
Anniversary of a Massacre: Campaign for Uyghurs (CFU) marked the 35th anniversary of the Barin Massacre, a tragic yet often forgotten event in which Uyghur protesters in East Turkistan peacefully opposed the Chinese Communist Party’s brutal One-Child Policy and its targeting of Uyghur women through forced abortions. On April 5, 1990, the CCP responded with overwhelming military force, killing many demonstrators and subjecting survivors to torture, unjust trials, and long prison sentences. Occurring just months after the Tiananmen Square Massacre, Barin has been largely erased from public memory—a deliberate act of censorship and historical distortion that continues the CCP’s oppression of the Uyghur people.
Science Gone Mad
Transplanted Uterus Functions: A baby girl named Amy has become the first child in the UK born to a mother with a donated womb. Her mother, Grace Davidson, 36, was born with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome, a rare condition in which the womb is absent or underdeveloped, though her ovaries function normally. In 2023, Grace received a womb transplant from her sister, Amy Purdie, in the UK’s only successful procedure of its kind to date. Following fertility treatment, including the creation of embryos and implantation of one, Grace found out she was pregnant. She and her husband Angus welcomed their daughter in February—naming her after the sister whose womb she was grown in. Since the first womb transplant birth in Sweden in 2014, around 135 transplants have occurred worldwide, resulting in about 65 births.
Pro-Life Around the World
Illegal Operation Uncovered: A major illegal sex-selective abortion racket has been uncovered in Tamil Nadu, India, resulting in multiple arrests. Health officials launched a decoy operation after a botched abortion led them to one of the accused, who had a history of similar offenses dating back to 2017. The network charged women to determine the sex of their unborn babies via ultrasound and, if female, administered abortion pills. An undercover operation involving a woman posing as a pregnant mother led authorities to a house equipped with an ultrasound machine and abortion drugs, exposing a wide-reaching network operating across several districts. The group was charging between 15,000–20,000 rupees [~ $175 to $230] for sex determination and 25,000–30,000 rupees [~ $300 to $350] for abortions.

Abortion Rising in Canada: Canada’s reported abortion rate has reached its highest level in nearly a decade. There were 101,553 abortions recorded in 2023—a tragic increase of over 4,000 from the previous year and the first time since 2015 the number has exceeded 100,000. The latest abortion data, released by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), shows that this is the fourth increase since the 1997 peak, despite consistent population growth. While population growth partially explains the rise, the abortion rate itself—now at 11.1 per 1,000 women aged 15–49—has also begun to climb after years of decline. No changes in reporting methodology occurred in 2022 or 2023, suggesting the increase reflects real trends rather than improved data collection. Economic instability, pandemic-related uncertainty, and rising costs of living are likely contributing factors, as more Canadians choose abortion when facing unplanned pregnancies.
Shifting Abortion Demographics: Recent statistics from Germany show a shift in the demographics of women seeking abortions, with a notable increase in older women opting for the procedure. A total of 106,000 abortions were reported in the past year, reflecting a slight increase of 0.2% from the previous year. Over the last decade, the number of abortions among younger women has declined, while the proportion of older women seeking abortions has risen significantly. While abortions have declined by 14% among younger women (ages 15-17) and 8% in the 20-24 age group, there has been a substantial increase in older age groups, including a 31% rise among women aged 35 to 39 and a 23% rise among women aged 40 to 44. Most abortions (96%) were carried out under the counseling regulation, while only 4% were attributed to medical reasons or cases of sexual violence. Over half were completed surgically, while 41% were chemically induced using mifepristone.
Pro-Life on the Home Front
Life Issues Not Forgotten: Last year, the Republican Party shifted away from pro-life language in the Republican Party Platform, leaving many concerned that the Life issues were going to be ignored in Washington moving forward. However, the results of FRC Action’s 2024 Vote Scorecard show that this isn’t the case. A total of 171 members of Congress received a perfect pro-life, pro-biology rating for their votes across 16 key issues in the U.S. House and Senate. Notably, the life issue was central to many of these votes, including several in the Senate to oppose abortion and unethical genetic practices under the guise of fertility protection. In the House, FRC Action scored votes on multiple bills and amendments, including those aimed at protecting pregnant women, requiring informed consent, and preventing military-funded abortions.
Ignoring the FDA: Pending legislation in Illinois, House Bill 3637, seeks to bypass the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) authority in determining the safety of chemical abortion pills. If passed, the bill would instruct Illinois officials to continue allowing access to these drugs, even if the FDA rescinds its approval. The law, which has already passed the Illinois House, would prevent any changes in FDA approval from limiting the availability of abortion pills by allowing their use if recommended by the World Health Organization, regardless of the FDA’s ruling. Illinois representatives, including Representative Dagmara Avela, would rather continue to endanger women through unsafe chemical abortion practices than limit abortion in any way.

Colorado Bishops Protest: The Colorado Catholic bishops are urging Governor Jared Polis to veto a bill that would allocate at least $1.5 million in public funds annually to cover Medicaid-funded abortions. In a letter co-signed by Archbishop Samuel Aquila, Auxiliary Bishop Jorge Rodriguez, Bishop James Golka, and Bishop Stephen Berg, they expressed their “deep disappointment and grave concern” over the legislation, which would require the state to provide abortion coverage for Medicaid and Child Health Plan Plus participants. The bishops pointed out the truth that the bill violates the dignity of human life, endangers women’s safety, and disregards the conscience rights of many Coloradans who oppose using their tax dollars for abortion. The bill has already passed both the state House and Senate.
Abortion Proposal Shot Down: Arkansas legislators have reaffirmed the state’s commitment to protecting preborn babies by rejecting a proposal from pro-abortion Democrat Ashley Hudson that sought to expand exceptions to the state’s abortion laws. The Arkansas House committee voted down Hudson’s amendment, which would have allowed abortions in cases of rape, incest, or for broad “health” reasons, including mental health concerns like potential depression. Current Arkansas law prohibits abortions except when allegedly necessary to save the life of the mother, though medical experts confirm that direct abortion is never necessary to save a mother’s life.
Euthanasia Rate Remains High: In 2024, the number of assisted suicides in Oregon remained high, with 376 deaths reported under the state’s Death with Dignity Act, making up nearly 1% of all deaths in the state that year. However, the final figure may increase as reports continue to be received after January 2025. Of the 376 deaths, complications were unknown in two-thirds of the cases, as data on complications is only recorded when a healthcare provider is present. In the 121 cases where complications were reported, 7.44% involved issues such as difficulty ingesting the lethal substance or seizures. The report also highlighted that many individuals who chose assisted suicide were primarily concerned about being a burden on others (42%), losing autonomy (88.6%), and/or losing their sense of dignity (63.6%).

A Win for Life and Free Speech: A federal district court delivered a major victory for life and free speech by permanently blocking an Illinois law that forced pro-life pregnancy centers to promote abortion—directly contradicting their mission to protect unborn children. Represented by Alliance Defending Freedom, the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates and three pro-life centers spent seven years fighting this unconstitutional mandate. The court rightly recognized that compelling these centers to speak against their deeply held beliefs violated their First Amendment rights. These centers reject the claim that abortion has medical benefits, pointing instead to its serious risks, including infection, hemorrhaging, uterine perforation, and even death.
Quote of the Week
“Many people have raised concerns over sex discrimination. But sex-selective abortion is the worst form of discrimination imaginable. It is not simply denying someone a job or a just salary. It’s denying them life itself. It is discrimination that kills.”
~ PRI President Steven Mosher
