PRI in the Media
Argentina Without Abortion: One of PRI’s Weekly Briefings was shared on Pregnancy Help News this week. In case you missed it, Dr. Carlos Beltramo, Director of PRI’s European Office, detailed how Javier Milei plans to end abortion in Argentina. During Milei’s campaign, he was outspoken against abortion, which is why many were confused when the presidential spokesperson recently said, “At this moment, the president’s agenda does not include the repeal of abortion.” But Dr. Beltramo explains the two main reasons behind this lack of action: the current legal status of abortion in Argentina and the limits on the power Milei can exercise in working with the Argentine Congress. Despite these difficulties, Milei’s administration is still determined to implement pro-life policies in Argentina, even if progress is slow.
Deepening Depopulation
The Pro-Natalist Movement: For decades, PRI has been warning the world that demographic decline is coming for developed nations. Now, people are finally starting to wake up to the reality that Western nations around the world, including the United States, are experiencing depopulation. In the face of the “birth dearth,” a new pro-natalist movement has risen to the challenge. But, as World News Group points out, the only segment of this new pro-natalist movement that is truly succeeding are those who are not just pro-reproduction but also pro-family. The way to increase fertility rates is by supporting family life and making family growth possible for young couples. Those that are treating children, and their mothers, as a means to the end of increasing the fertility rate, end up dissuading women from becoming wives and mothers.
“The new Republican platform, just passed this week, promises strong support for ‘the Sanctity of Marriage, the blessings of childhood, the foundational role of families, and supports working parents’,” says Mr. Mosher. “This will translate into strong support for pro-natal, pro-marriage policies in the coming years, which is exactly what we need to have a hope of reversing America’s demographic decline.”
Japan’s Victims of Eugenics: In a landmark decision, Japan’s Supreme Court has ordered the country’s government to give compensation to 11 victims of the “Eugenics Protection Law.” This law was passed in 1948 and resulted in the sterilization of approximately 25,000 Japanese citizens between the 1950s and 1970s. The Supreme Court of Japan declared that the eugenic law was unconstitutional and rejected the government’s claim that the 20-year statute of limitations should prevent it from paying restitution. The 11 successful plaintiffs in this case fought hard at the five lower courts to get their case to the Supreme Court. There are still 28 other victims whose similar cases are still pending.
Communist China
Fertility in Guangdong: Birth rates are falling all over China, except in one province: Guangdong. For four consecutive years, Guangdong has been the sole province to log more than a million new births annually. According to the latest figures, it has topped the national birth rate record for six years in a row. Last year, Guangdong logged 1.03 million births, putting it far ahead of the 695,000 births logged by second-ranked Henan. A few factors that have contributed to Guangdong’s fertility success include ample job opportunities and a strong healthcare system. However, the biggest factor is the family-friendly attitude across the province. By being far from China’s political center, Beijing, Guangdong was able to develop its own identity, where strong family and clan systems were preserved. The one-child policy was also less strictly enforced in Guangdong in the 1980s and 1990s.
UN Misdeeds
Abolish Prostitution: In a surprising move, a UN human rights expert has issued a report advocating the abolition of prostitution. She also called for countries to abolish pornography and criminalize its possession and production. Reem Alsalem is the “special rapporteur on the causes and consequences of violence against women and girls.” She argued that prostitution is a system of exploitation and abuse that “reduces women and girls to mere commodities” and “hinders their ability to achieve true equality.” For this bold, and truthful, report, both “sexual rights” organizations and pro-abortion organizations are attacking Alsalem. The UN’s Women Deliver criticized Alsalem’s report as soon as it launched. The International Planned Parenthood Federation issued a press release stating, “We denounce in the strongest terms the content of this report and the ideologically driven process that led to it. There is no feminism without sex workers.”
Science Gone Mad
Rules for Synthetic Embryos: Last year, scientists from the United States and the United Kingdom created the first synthetic, human “embryo-like” structures. Now, scientists in the UK have developed their first rules to guide research using these human embryo models. The new code prohibits researchers from transferring embryo models made from human stem cells into the uterus of a living person or other animal. However, the guidelines do not set fixed time limits on how long models can be grown in the laboratory. Instead, the scientists are allowed to set their own time limits based on the minimum time needed to achieve their scientific objectives. Though there are strict rules for human embryos, dealing with embryo “models” is a completely new area. The United Kingdom is setting the tone for embryonic research around the world.
Abortion Studies Censored: Pro-life researchers fight to get the truth out about abortion complications, but face censorship on public platforms. Researcher James Studnicki, the vice president and director of data analytics at the Charlotte Lozier Institute, has spent 50 years interpreting health outcomes data. A few years back, he made two unexpected discoveries while studying emergency room data on post-abortion complications. First, hospitals were miscategorizing abortion-related emergencies as miscarriages and second, complications following abortions were more common than anyone previously reported. He published a paper with his findings in 2022, but earlier this year, his paper, along with two others on abortion complications, was removed from Sage Publications. The abortion industry uses its ties in the medical field to censor studies that expose the dangers of abortion to the world.
“One thing that we have learned over the past few years of the Covid pandemic is that scientific censorship is real and pervasive,” says Mr. Mosher. “The so-called scientific community is increasingly driven by a search for ideological purity rather than a search for the truth. Anyone with common sense understands that the physical, emotional, and psychological complications resulting from induced abortions are all too real and often devastating.”
Pro-Life Around the World
Leading Provider of Death: As of May 2022, one Canadian doctor had assisted in killing 430 patients upon request. By now, Dr. Ellen Wiebe has probably helped kill a few hundred more, though she will not give the exact number. Dr. Wiebe runs a contraception and abortion clinic in Vancouver, while also serving as “one of the most prominent and prolific providers of assisted dying in Canada.” She refers to her work in assisted killing as “incredibly rewarding.” Dr. Wiebe is an expert in killing the most vulnerable of populations, the unborn, the disabled, and the suffering. Due to Canada’s progressive laws, there is no stopping the deaths facilitated by Wiebe and she has publicly shared that, despite aging and personal health issues, “It’s the last thing I’ll give up.”
Pro-Life on the Home Front
Army Calls Prolifers Terrorists: An army base has been teaching U.S. Army members that pro-life organizations qualify as “terrorist groups.” On July 11th, self-described analyst Sam Shoemate shared proof of this indoctrination on X. He shared a photo of a slide — decorated with Fort Liberty’s Directorate of Emergency Services symbol — that classified pro-life organizations such as National Right to Life and Operation Rescue as “terrorist groups.” After being exposed, Fort Liberty’s public affairs office confirmed the slide’s authenticity to The Federalist. The office went on to say that the slides “do not reflect the views of the XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Liberty, the U.S. Army or the Department of Defense” and “will no longer be used, and all future training products will be reviewed to ensure they align with the current DoD anti-terrorism guidance.”
Justice for the Five: Two years ago, pro-life activists found 115 aborted babies inside a box of medical waste in Washington, D.C. Five of these babies showed signs of illegal partial-birth abortions or infanticide. AJ Hurley joined the Living a Culture of Life Podcast to share the story of finding these little, lost lives. Hurley, his wife, and a team of pro-life activists gave 110 of these infants a funeral mass and proper burial. Today, the five who suffered partial-birth abortions, and may have even been born alive, are still on ice, waiting for justice. This moved Hurley to start the “Justice For The Five” movement.
Good News
New Report, Lives Saved: A new report has shown that the heartbeat legislation in Florida is working. On May 1st, Governor Ron Desantis’s heartbeat law, which prevents abortions after six weeks gestation, went into effect. The report, posted online by the state Agency for Health Care Administration, showed that while there was an increase in abortions between June and July of this year, this increase was much lower than the months prior to the implementation of the new law. The increase from June to July was thousands less than in previous months. We will continue to watch the numbers in Florida as the heartbeat law continues to save little lives.
“The abortion movement is pulling out all the stops to overturn Florida’s new Heartbeat law,” says Mr. Mosher. “Amendment 4 to the Florida Constitution would legalize abortion up to birth, but its deceptive wording is intended to disguise that fact. The abortionists know they cannot openly admit that they want to practice infanticide or they would lose, so they lie.”
Quote of the Week
“I was, and am, thoroughly convinced that the pro-life/pro-family movement is quintessential, that nothing is more important, and that all depends on it–above all, Church, State, and humanity.”
~Fr. Paul Marx OSB, Founder of PRI, Faithful for Life
