A letter from a fan

Surely there aren’t people in this World that are this self-centered and shortsighted as to believe the crap on these [PRI Website] pages. Certainly nobody really believes that God put us here to pave this green earth, cut down the forests, drive untold millions of species to extinction, and pollute every inch of land?

How could anyone with any ounce of intelligence or compassion, say with a straight face that we ought to “go forth and multiply”, and strip this Earth ‘til there’s nothing left to take?

Someone here ought to take a long hard look at the realities of life. This is not “our World” to do with as we please… This Earth is a precision machine, created of billions and billions of critical, interconnected parts, ALL of which are required to sustain life.

How can you sit there and watch the forests bum, the fisheries collapse, the island ecosystems destroyed, and say that “it is ours to do with as we please.” .…

I also believe that children with severe defects requiring medical intervention (transplants, life support etc) should be allowed to die, or “put down” quickly and painlessly. Heck, why do transplants at all? Someone wants to kill themselves by smoking, let them. Don’t give them new lungs when they wear out the old ones. If people want to OD on drugs and die, line. Why rush them to the hospital? Just let them go. If some drunk crashes his car in the snow, leave him there. If his injuries aren’t severe enough to kill him, maybe he’ll actually come to his senses and realize how stupid he was, before he dies of hypothermia…

Since we are so free to change our behavior let’s do it. Let’s stop having such large families. Heck, let’s limit Catholics and Mormons to 1 child per couple and lever everyone else have 2. That ought to solve a lot of our problems right there. Mandatory birth control after one child…

John Bohrman, via the Internet.

Editors’ reply: T.S. Eliot opined that April is the cruelest month but with mail running along the lines of this letter we would be inclined to nominate December for that honor.

For the record let us point out that we have never advocated any of the destructive environmental ills that the author charges we have, and would not. We simply do not believe that reducing the numbers of people, particularly by coercive population control, will necessarily ameliorate any of those ills.

We further believe that the burden of proof for alleged “overpopulation” ills rests with those who would seek to deny human rights and freedoms in the environmental, or any other, cause. We have examined their case and found it wanting.

But such letters serve a purpose. They allow a brief window into the mentality of those who would advocate the misery of population control (usually for others who are poorer; weaker or both) for a sake of a “greater good.” (as defined by those who are richer, stronger, or both). Out of similar sentiments have the most evil totalitarian regimes arisen in the past and rise today.

Finally, while John Bohrman’s ideas are malicious, know that we personally bear him no malice. Rest assured, dear reader, that if we found him unconscious in a ditch on a snowy night, we would endeavor to save him, despite himself.
