Correspondence: Kudos; Norplant ups and downs; an atheist opposes it too

Kudos

Just got your complimentary review — good job!

I’ve been exposing the over-population myth to my students for years — perhaps we might share a few ideas. For example, one of the methods I teach for spotting extremists is: Do the arithmetic! For instance, on your page 16, you mention the world grain harvest in ’96–97 of 1.865 billion metric tons. If you do the arithmetic, i.e., divide by the current world population of 5.5 billion, you get 1/3 metric ton or 300 kg per person per year — 2 lb. per person per day. Next question, ever try eating 2 lbs. per day of grain?

Anyway, it’s great to see that someone is taking the time and effort to inform the world about this ongoing scam. Here’s my check for $30.

More Norplant Woes

I have had Norplant for the past year. Since the time I had it put in I have had nothing but side effects from it. I have been on other Birth Control and have never had any problems like I have had with the Norplant. I suffer from headaches, depression, weight gain and other things. I feel that I was not properly informed prior to the insertion. It was not until after it had been inserted that I read the information that came in the kit. If I had been given information prior to buying the kit I would have opted for another form of birth control.

The scary thing is that I am not the only who has had these and many more problems. There may not be any proof that Norplant has caused these health problems, but if you take into account all the women who have had the problems, and how many of them are using Norplant, I think that is proof enough.

Norplant over childbirth

Upon reading all of the negative press surrounding Norplant I would like to enter some comments of my own. I am a 32 year old woman with 2 children ages 14 and 6. I had my first norplants inserted in the summer of 1992. I had become pregnant with my daughter while on the pill and had many previous problems with other pills. Receiving the Norplant was a god send for me and prevented other unwanted pregnancies. I had no side effects and actually lost weight. I had this set removed last month and am getting new ones inserted next week. Removal was a little uncomfortable, yes, but it’s nothing compared to giving birth!

Please do not take these off the market. For some they work well and I would hate to lose my choice!

Editors’ reply: While it may be true that some women have suffered few or no side-effects from Norplant, we believe the experience of thousands of others precludes the device being left on the market.

An atheist against pop control

I’m a student at the Bronx High School of Science in New York doing a project for school about population control. Basically, my three partners in my Bioethics class are going to argue for population control, and I will argue against it.

While I am an atheist, and I know that this organization is connected with the Catholic church, I certainly agree with many of your points about population control. Certainly money need not be wasted on mandatory contraception world-wide when enough food to feed all of Africa lies rotting in silos in the Czech Republic (to keep grain prices up). Anyway, thank you for providing a resource for my research.

Also, do you know of any local groups in New York with similar points of view that I could invite to speak before class?

Editors’ reply: Young Mr. Waletzky’s ability to see through the population control hoax is to be commended. Yet he errs when he declares that PRI is “connected” to the Catholic Church. We believe people of all faiths, and none, can conclude that population control should be stopped.
