PRI in the Media
Trump Defunds Left-Leaning CRS: The Trump administration has withdrawn federal funding from left-leaning Catholic Relief Services (CRS) for 11 of its 13 aid programs. CRS claims to aid the poor while upholding “Catholic values”. However, multiple PRI investigations have revealed CRS partnerships with groups promoting contraception and abortion, particularly in African countries. Defunding CRS is a critical step toward ensuring that taxpayer dollars do not fund anti-life agendas under the banner of Catholic charity. While serving the poor remains essential, the withdrawal of funds is a necessary measure to ensure that U.S. aid aligns with moral principles and does not inadvertently support practices contrary to the sanctity of life.
“Repeatedly, over the years, PRI has encouraged Sean Callahan, the head of Catholic Relief Services, to live up to the organization’s name and abide by Catholic teaching on the Life issues,” says Mr. Mosher. “But repeated investigations have shown that CRS not only continues to engage in practices at odds with Church teaching, but blatantly denies any wrongdoing. The cut-off of most U.S. funding to this organization is long overdue.”
COVID Controversy
Biden Hid Vaccine Risks: Senator Ron Johnson has released a Senate report revealing that the Biden administration knowingly delayed public warnings about heart-related risks—like myocarditis—linked to mRNA COVID-19 vaccines. The report states that federal agencies were aware of rising myocarditis cases in young people by early 2021 but waited months to update labels and issue alerts, fearing they might appear “alarmist.” Physicians who spoke out faced censorship. Johnson accuses officials of prioritizing political narrative over public health transparency, saying the public deserved full disclosure of vaccine risks—especially for youth.
“Senator Ron Johnson’s hearing on Covid Vax injuries was a bombshell,” says PRI President Steven Mosher, “The investigative report, reported on by RedState, cataloged a shocking number of deaths and injuries tied to the vaccines. These were primarily related to heart issues–heart attacks, myocarditis, pericarditis, etc. The Biden Administration, health officials, and media companies (paid flacks, as it turned out), went to extraordinary lengths to silence anyone who tried to bring attention to them.”
“What jumped out at me was this,” Mr. Mosher continued. “Remember the reports of miscarriages among the women who took the Vax after being told it was perfectly safe for pregnant women? One early study found that the miscarriage rate for pregnant women who took the jab in the first trimester was 82%. We reported this at the time. The Vigilant Fox Substack points out that, if the 82% is accurate, then it ‘mirrors the effects of chemical abort drugs.’ Population control by any other name is still population control.”
Communist China
China’s Family Crisis Worsens: China’s efforts to reverse its population decline are faltering, as marriage and birth rates continue to fall. After decades of enforcing brutal population control policies—most infamously the one-child policy—the Chinese government is now scrambling to reverse the damage. Marriage rates have fallen sharply (down 8% in early 2025), while divorces have risen. Financial incentives and intrusive tactics, like tracking women’s menstrual cycles, have failed to convince young people to marry or have children. These trends reflect a crisis that cannot be solved by financial incentives alone. Marriage and family are sacred, grounded in moral and spiritual truths. True renewal requires a cultural shift toward valuing life, family, and human dignity—not coercive state policies or economic manipulation.
Taken, Not Abandoned: A recent exposé from The New Yorker revealed the tragic legacy of China’s one-child policy, enforced by the Chinese Communist government. It tells the story of Mia Griffin, an American adoptee who, through DNA testing, discovered that she was taken from her birth father by Family Planning officials and falsely listed as “abandoned.” Mia was one of many forced removals that led to international adoptions under false pretenses. These forced separations were one of many human rights abuses carried out by the Chinese Communist Party during the reign of the one-child policy.
China’s Men Buying Foreign Brides: China continues to face the fallout of the one-child policy, including a severe gender gap with approximately 35 million more men than women. An estimated 30 to 50 million “leftover men” are unable to find wives due to this severe gender imbalance. In response, some men are turning to foreign “bride buying,” often through trafficking or scam marriages. The Chinese government has issued warnings against these practices, since these efforts often lead to marriage scams through the use of illegal matchmaking services.
UN Misdeeds
UN Promotes Redefinition of the Family: On May 16th, the UN held an event titled “Love and Inclusion are Family Values: Protecting All Families and Individuals.” This event was held in conjunction with the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia and the International Day of Families. UN agencies and Western governments advanced an agenda to redefine the family, sidelining the natural family structure, founded on the union of one man and one woman. Speakers framed traditional values as exclusionary and called for policy changes to accommodate a wide range of so-called “diverse” family models.
WHO Backs Birth Control for Kids: The World Health Organization (WHO), a specialized agency of the UN, has issued a new guidance urging the widespread use of long-acting contraceptives—including self-injectables—for adolescents, even those under the age of 15. The document also recommends that governments revise age-of-consent laws to expand minors’ ability to access these drugs without parental involvement. It also dismisses adolescents’ opposition to contraceptives due to side effects or religious beliefs as “myths and misinformation.” The report further promotes comprehensive sexuality education starting at age 5, referencing UN material that includes controversial teachings on gender identity and sexual behavior.
Science Gone Mad
The War on Biology: A new 409-page report critically examines the science and ethics behind medical interventions such as puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries performed on minors, highlighting growing concerns over so-called “gender-affirming” treatments for children. The number of children diagnosed with “gender dysphoria” from ages 6 to 17 has soared from 15,000 in 2017 to over 42,000 in 2021. This report finds these practices to be largely unsupported by long-term evidence and driven by ideology rather than sound medicine leading vulnerable children down an irreversible path. This trend represents a dangerous denial of biological reality. Efforts to “change” one’s sex through drugs or surgery are deeply harmful, especially for children. The report calls for immediate policy changes to protect minors from medical practices that reject the truth and integrity of the human person as created male or female.
Pro-Life Around the World
Africa’s Stand for Family: The Daily Declaration has reported that as of 2025, Africa has over 754 million Christians, which makes it the “heart of global Christianity.” There is increasing pressure from Western governments and NGOs seeking to impose radical social policies on African nations as a condition for aid and development assistance. These policies, often promoted under the banner of “human rights,” are in direct conflict with the traditional family values held by many African communities. At the Pan-African Conference on Family Values, Christian leaders from across the continent gathered to affirm their commitment to the natural family and to resist ideological interference from foreign donors.
UK Moves to Scrap Abortion Laws: Two amendments to the UK’s Criminal Justice Bill aim to remove remaining legal protections for unborn children in England and Wales. Labour MPs Stella Creasy and Tonia Antoniazzi propose separate measures to decriminalize abortion entirely. Antoniazzi’s amendment would eliminate criminal penalties for women who procure abortions, while Creasy’s goes further, seeking to enshrine abortion access in law and potentially allow abortion up to birth. These proposals follow high-profile prosecutions under the 1861 Offences Against the Person Act, which campaigners claim are outdated. The Society for the Protection of the Unborn (SPUC) has warned that decriminalization would strip unborn children of all legal protection and pave the way for abortion without restriction. SPUC is calling on supporters to contact their MPs to oppose the amendments before the upcoming parliamentary debate. The vote is expected later this summer and will mark a critical moment for the future of pro-life protections in the UK.
NHS Maternity Failures Cost Lives: A new report by baby loss charities reveals that persistent failures in NHS maternity care have contributed to the preventable deaths of at least 2,500 babies in England since 2018. The UK government pledged in 2015 to halve stillbirths, neonatal deaths, and maternal mortality by 2025—but progress has stalled. Stillbirth and neonatal death rates remain troublingly high, and preterm birth rates have shown little improvement. Despite official commitments and published safety recommendations, implementation has been slow and inconsistent. The report calls for urgent action, including renewed goals for 2035 and full delivery of long-overdue reforms. This report is a tragic reminder that true respect for life must extend beyond birth, demanding accountability and investment in maternal and infant care.
Pro-Life on the Home Front
Obamacare Loophole Funds Abortion: Maryland Governor, Wes Moore, has signed legislation creating a new state abortion fund by tapping into an overlooked provision of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The law redirects millions collected through the ACA’s abortion surcharge—originally intended to be kept separate from federal health care funding—toward a state-run Public Health Abortion Grant Program. The program begins with a $25 million allocation and will receive $3 million annually to expand abortion access, including for the uninsured and non-citizens. Insurers must transfer 90% of abortion-related surcharge funds collected since 2014 to the state by September 2024. This exploitation of a loophole in federal law sets a troubling precedent for other states. Instead of supporting genuine healthcare needs, taxpayer funds are being funneled into a system that promotes abortion on demand.
Fired Staff Start New Abortion Clinic: Two former employees of Colorado abortionist Warren Hern—known for performing late-term abortions—have announced plans to open a new abortion facility after Hern’s clinic closed, resulting in their dismissal. The pair, reportedly blindsided by their termination, aim to continue offering late-term abortions at a new location. Hern, who has long drawn national scrutiny for his willingness to perform abortions even in the third trimester, has not publicly commented on the staff’s plan. The former employees claim they remain committed to “serving patients” despite parting ways with one of the country’s most controversial abortion providers. This is a troubling expansion of the late-term abortion industry.
House Defunds Planned Parenthood: The House has passed a sweeping budget package that defunds Planned Parenthood and strips taxpayer funding from abortion providers. The bill also includes provisions to protect children by eliminating funding for groups involved in harmful transgender interventions on minors. Among its many reforms, the bill strengthens border security, reduces wasteful government spending, and introduces a $1,000 “Trump” savings account for every child born between 2024 and 2028. This decisive step towards removing federal support for the abortion industry is a victory for the pro-life movement. Students for Life Action President Kristan Hawkins called it “a historic win for pro-life Americans and children in the womb.” The bill now heads to the Senate, where debate is expected. For now, the passage marks a strong stand in the fight to redirect federal priorities.
“We at PRI applaud the looming cuts to Planned Parenthood’s federal funding,” says Mr. Mosher. “The abortion giant is the single biggest executioner of unborn children in the U.S. today. It does not deserve one penny of your tax dollars.”
Over 1 Million Abortions Post-Dobbs: A new analysis by the Charlotte Lozier Institute reveals that more than 1.1 million abortions occurred in the U.S. between July 2023 and June 2024—despite the Dobbs decision and a growing number of pro-life state laws. Alarmingly, 95.9% of these procedures were elective, involving healthy mothers and healthy babies. The findings highlight the rise of abortion “shield states” and the increased use of chemical abortion pills, which now dominate the industry. Pro-life leaders warn that while the legal landscape has shifted, the culture of death persists—and new strategies are urgently needed to support mothers and protect unborn life. The report underscores a sobering reality: the fall of Roe v. Wade was not the end of abortion in America, but the beginning of a new phase in the fight for life.
Good News
Senators Move to Cut Childbirth Costs: A bipartisan group of U.S. Senators has introduced the Supporting Healthy Moms and Babies Act, aiming to eliminate out-of-pocket costs for prenatal and childbirth care for those with private insurance. Senators Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Josh Hawley (R-MO), and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) co-sponsored the bill. The legislation would classify prenatal, delivery, postpartum, and neonatal services as essential health benefits—requiring full coverage without copays or deductibles. With childbirth costs often exceeding $10,000, many families are burdened financially during one of life’s most important moments. The bill addresses this crisis by ensuring comprehensive care, including mental health support for mothers up to a year postpartum. Pro-family advocates and medical professionals have welcomed the proposal as a step towards supporting life, strengthening families, and promoting maternal and infant health.
Quote of the Week
“Those of us who have children know that they are living, laughing signs of God’s presence in our lives. Raising such little images of God takes you on what is perhaps life’s greatest adventure.”
