Lima, Peru–Ten Peruvian congressmen are about to be punished by their Congress because of saying the truth about the use of US funds of USAID in a pro abortion event. On February 23, 2004, seven feminist and pro abortion organizations accused them to the Congress Ethics Committee. This Committee will evaluate arguments and take a decision next week.
Actually, these congressmen presented a well document information about the USAID funded conference Regional Committee: Reproductive Health Situation in Peru. October 11, 2003
. Based on a PRI research, they sent a letter to Andrew Natsios, USAID administrator in Washington, asking for an investigation. This evidence included a video showing feminist speakers of this event claiming for abortion legalization in Peru and behind them there was logo of USAID. The whole event was focused on the promotion of a reproductive health
bill. Enclosed documentation presented to Natsios showed without any doubt the purpose of decriminalize abortion in Peru.
Although no USAID official has commented anything about that evidence in Peru, many of the USAID funded feminist and pro abortion organizations have attacked pro life congressmen in media and with several letters sent to the other Peruvian congressmen.
Congressmen Luis Santa Maria and Elvira de la Puente, leading and representing this parliamentary prolife group, presented their discharges. It is not a crime is to say the truth: pro abortion groups are using USAID funds. We do know that US Mexico City Policy has been broken with this kind of initiatives. We did not break any law, to the contrary, silent is complicity. I could not imagine that USAID official in Peru do not know that these feminist groups are promoting decriminalize of abortion in our country against our Constitution
, claimed congresswoman Elvira de la Puente.
PRI is dedicated to ending human rights abuses committed in the name of family planning and through research to dispelling the myth of overpopulation.
