From America’s Heartland:  The Rebuilding the Culture of Life Conference

The rebuilding of the culture of life and love in America will begin in the heartland.  Population Research Institute (PRI) will host its Rebuilding a Culture of Life conference, in conjunction with the Bishops’ Pastoral Plan for Pro-Life Activities (BPPPLA), Diocese of Lincoln, Nebraska (http://www.nebcathcon.org/bpppla.htm).  The PRI/BPPPLA conference takes place October 24-26, 2003, (Friday through Sunday), at the Cornhusker Hotel in Lincoln, Nebraska (www.thecornhusker.com).

Population Research Institute (PRI) is dedicated to defending the culture of life the world over. The Bishops’ Pastoral Plan for Pro-Life Activities is the official pro-life program of the Catholic Church in the United States, operating at the state, diocesan and parish levels to rebuild the culture of life and love throughout America.

Rebuilding the culture of life in America and the world is a daunting task, but nothing is impossible with God. The global battle in defense of life and the human person begins at home, in America. And the battle for America begins in the heartland, where families are strong and life is respected.

Leading off the roster of conference speakers is Bowie Kuhn, the well-known former Commissioner of Baseball.  Currently Chairman of the Culture of Life Foundation, Dr. Kuhn will speak on the theme of the conference, Rebuilding the Culture of Life.

Honorable Robert H. Bork will give the keynote address at the conference banquet on Saturday evening, October 25 at 7:00 p.m.  Judge Bork will speak on the moral deterioration of modern American culture, the topic of his hard-hitting book, Slouching Towards Gomorrah;

Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz, bishop of Lincoln, Nebraska, will also speak on Saturday, October 25 at 10:30 a.m., on Humanae Vitae, in recognition of the 35th anniversary of the Church’s seminal document in defense of human life and the dignity of the human person.

PRI President Steven Mosher will speak at the conference on Saturday, October 25 at 4:00 p.m., on The War on People, and on Sunday October 26 at 10:45 a.m., on Finding God in China.

Mosher was the first American social scientist permitted to study in mainland China. In 1980, he first documented China’s brutal one-child policy. In 2002, based largely on PRI’s most recent investigation in China, and with support from the US Catholic Bishops and the Vatican, President Bush cut $34 million from the UN Population Fund because of its support of forced abortion in China.

In addition, the conference features the following speakers:

The Honorable Mike Johanns, Governor of Nebraska, who will speak at a conference luncheon on Sunday, October 26 at 12:00 noon, on Hope for Life in Government;

Mary Ellen Bork, who serves as a board member of several organizations including Women Affirming Life, and in an advisory capacity for Christendom College and the Susan B. Anthony List. Mrs. Bork will speak on Saturday, October 25 at 2:30 p.m., on The New Feminism.

David C. Reardon, Ph.D., director of the Elliot Institute and expert on the after-effects of abortion, who will speak on Sunday, October 26 at 9:15 a.m., on Abortion’s Aftermath.

William L. Toffler, M.D., professor and director of the Education Section of the Department of Family Medicine at Oregon Health and Science University, and co-founder and national director of Physicians for Compassionate Care Education Foundation. Dr. Toffler will speak on Saturday, October 25 at 1:00 p.m., on Compassionate Care for the Dying.

To register for the conference, please call Marie Smith at PRI, 540-622-5240 ext. 207 ([email protected]); or Michele at BPPPLA, 402-489-3733 ([email protected]).
