US Census Bureau Report on Slowing Global Population Growth Reveals Need to End Costly Population Control Programs, says PRI Monday

March 22, 5:24 pm ET

WASHINGTON, March 22 /PRNewswire/ — “It’s time for the population control movement to call off the dogs,” said Steven Mosher, president of Population Research Institute (PRI), a human rights group dedicated to dispelling the myth that the world is overpopulated.

“The population explosion it predicted never happened, and the anti- natalists should pack up their tents and go home.”

Mosher was responding to a new report from the U.S. Census Bureau report released today titled, “Global Population Profile: 2002.” The report states that global population growth peaked over a decade ago, and that birth rates are falling at an alarming rate, unprecedented in human history.

“Many countries are already facing severe economic and societal challenges because of depopulation,” Mosher said.

According to the report, the slowdown in global population growth is linked primarily to fertility decline. Global fertility will be below replacement by 2050. The report confirms that world population, because of low fertility, will continue to age. The number of children born is expected to remain low.

According to the report, African countries, due to HIV/AIDS, will experience high levels of mortality. This, combined with lower levels of fertility in the near future, will lower the average life expectancy at birth to around 30 years by 2010, a level not seen since the beginning of the 20th century.

“As birth rates fall into the cellar, it’s time for the U.S. government to stop spending hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars each year on programs designed to lower the number of babies born even further,” said Mosher. “The U.S. government must abandon its thirty-year effort to contracept and sterilize the world. USAID’s Office of Population must be shut down. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) must be shut down. And all population monies must be shifted to pro-natal programs. Otherwise the looming threat of global depopulation will become a devastating reality.”

Population Research Institute is dedicated to ending human rights abuses committed in the name of family planning and through research to dispelling the myth of overpopulation.
