President Xi Jinping: Stop the One-Child Policy!

The woman on the operating table was nearly eight months pregnant. The doctor picked up a scalpel and made a transverse incision across her lower abdomen. Soon he was through the uterine wall, and removing a perfectly formed baby boy. The little boy was dead, of course, having been killed by lethal injection into the uterus the day before. It was March 1980, and the Chinese Party-State had just gotten deadly serious about population control. …

Melinda Gates Wants to Help Women Around the World

Surely, Mrs. Gates would not have chosen this course if she knew the serious risks of Depo-Provera and if anyone—her Catholic parents, her Catholic high school teachers at the Ursuline Academy in Dallas or her parish priests (she attends Mass near her Medina, Washington home)—had taken the time to explain Humanae Vitae to her. This is, of course, the prophetic 1968 encyclical by Pope Paul VI that reaffirms the timeless teaching of the Church on …

Reducing Maternal Mortality in Nigeria

With its vast natural resources, the African country of Nigeria has the wherewithal to lift itself out of poverty without foreign help.  If it would put its oil money to work educating its population, building a first-rate infrastructure, and creating an industrial base, it could be another Japan. But the West is trying to impose another agenda on the African giant. Instead of encouraging industrialization, the West talks about “sustainable development” (read: slow or no …

African Women Turning to Natural Family Planning; Turning Down Abortifacient Contraceptives, Survey Reveals

It seemed like your typical family planning conference: it was sponsored by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the World Health Organization’s Department of Reproductive Health and Research. It had the typical title: “Is access enough? Understanding and addressing unmet need for Family Planning.” It even seemed to have the usual group of presenters ready with their cherry-picked findings to lobby for even more money to be spent on the contraception and sterilization …

One-Child Policy Drives Chinese Father of Four to Suicide

China’s draconian one-child policy has claimed many victims—hundreds of millions of unborn children have lost their lives, tens of thousands of women have died from botched abortions and sterilizations, and tens of thousands more have committed suicide to end the pain of late-term, forced abortions—but Wang Guangrong’s story is particularly tragic. Wang, a 37-year old Chinese father of four, had long been persecuted by local government officials for daring to flout China’s restrictions against multiple …

Why the baby kidnapper shouldn’t die

An obstetrician in the Shaanxi province of China was sentenced to death for child trafficking this week. The 55 year old woman repeatedly told her patients that their new born infant was either deformed or sick. She persuaded the new parents to give up their children for adoption. Instead of adoption, however, the infants were sold to human traffickers for profit.  Doctor Zhang Shuxia pleaded guilty to selling seven children, but she remains the prime suspect in …

Cutting Foreign Aid to Save Lives

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) such as UNICEF and CARE Australia are up in arms over the new Australian Prime Minister’s plan to reduce foreign aid by $4.5 billion. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, they claim that such cuts will come at “expense of children’s lives."[1] Worse yet, they will compromise the commitments under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Now we’re not really concerned about feeding the U.N. bureaucracy, so we’ll leave that organization’s vaguer MDG’s—such things …

CRS Employees Recount Involvement in Family Planning: “It’s only the ‘Big Catholics’ Who Are Opposed to Contraception.”

In our month-long, on-the-ground investigation of Catholic Relief Services (CRS) activities in Madagascar, Population Research Institute (PRI) found that the organization was directly involved in the promotion and distribution of contraceptive and abortifacient drugs and devices in contravention of Church teaching. Said Steven Mosher, President of PRI, "CRS employees in Madagascar told us that they do "the same work" in family planning that CARE and other USAID-funded groups do. CRS claims to be "puzzled" by …
