Petition to: Ambassador Nikki Haley

Your Excellency:

We thank you for your strong commitment to uphold the right to life for all. We thank you for your promise to support at the United Nations any initiative to prevent recourse to abortion.

We urge you to use the full power and influence of your office to defend the right to life for the unborn child across the entire United Nations system. We also ask that the right to life for the sick, the elderly, and the disabled and other members of the human family are also protected.

We ask that you denounce any and every attempt by treaty monitoring bodies, the Human Rights Council, the General Assembly, or any specialized agency, fund, programme or other U.N. organization to declare abortion a “human right.” We ask that you denounce any attempt by a U.N. entity to create an obligation for member states to decriminalize, legalize, provide access to, or provide information on abortion.

We ask that the United States Mission to the United Nations (USUN) make reservations on any mention of the term “sexual and reproductive health” and we ask the USUN make it clear that the United States of America does not consider abortion to be included under the term “reproductive health.”

We ask the USUN to reiterate the aspirations set forth in the Declaration of the Rights of the Child that “the child, by reason of his physical and mental immaturity, needs special safeguards and care, including appropriate legal protection, before as well as after birth.” We urge the USUN to see to it that this language is included verbatim in U.N. resolutions, U.N. masthead documents, U.N. reports, and U.N. publications.

We also ask you to see to it that the “the right to life, including the unborn child” is included in U.N. resolutions, international agreements, U.N. masthead documents, and U.N. reports.

We encourage you to nominate candidates for treaty monitoring bodies for the upcoming elections in 2018.

We strongly implore you to see to it that all candidates elected as members of treaty monitoring bodies will respect the right to life for the unborn child without qualifications of any kind.

We ask you to please note that several treaty monitoring bodies have overstepped their mandate by urging state parties to legalize abortion contrary to the customary norm for interpreting treaties as encapsulated in article 31 of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties (1969), particularly the Human Rights Committee, the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), the Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC), the Committee on the Economic, Social & Cultural Rights (CESCR), and the Committee against Torture (CAT).

We would like to kindly draw to your attention the upcoming nomination deadlines for treaty monitoring body elections, especially the Human Right Committee (December 2017), the Committee on the Economic, Social & Cultural Rights, the Committee on the Rights of the Child (February 2018), the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women, and the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (April 12, 2018).

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
