In Case You Missed It: Population Control News from Around the World

Burmese Population Control Bill Signed Into Law: Thousands Flee in Boats On May 19th, Myanmar’s president, Thein Sein, signed the “Population Control and Healthcare Law.” This law is part of a package of four bills labeled “race and religion protection bills.” The Population Control Law is written in language that mandates birth spacing and allows local governments to oversee population control initiatives. Police Brutality Happens Every Day in China

“Just a few days ago, I got a case involving a man who was disabled due to a severe beating by local government personnel just because his sister-in-law had had an additional baby without a permit.” — Chen Guangcheng Last Thursday, on April 30th, Congressman Chris Smith chaired a hearing on population control in China in the U.S. Capitol. The hearing covered appalling human rights abuses—police brutality, illegal detention, torture, forced abortion, and coerced sterilization—under China’s …

A War on Maternity Waged in the Name of Mother Earth

I often come across persons who attempt to justify forced abortion, sterilization, and contraception because “We (that is, human beings) are destroying the planet”. They view people as pollution, and argue that it is necessary to violate reproductive rights to protect the planet from the beings who are despoiling it. Yet that logic is intrinsically flawed. Let us put it this way. Which of these do not belong: nitrous oxide, methane, Homo sapiens, or carbon …

She is relentless in her pursuit of women who have conceived “illegal” second children. She is pitiless in coercing them one and all into terminations. But 30 years (and thousands of forced abortions) later Gugu — the midwife in question — has a …

Sterilization Camps in India

Anne Roback Morse gave an address on March 13, 2015 at the United Nations surrounding the Commission on the Status of Women at a panel titled, “Coerced Sterilizations, Abortions, and Reproductive Rights.” The following remarks are based on excerpts from that address. Last November, 83 women were sterilized in a matter of hours at a sterilization camp in the east Indian state of Chhattisgarh. At least a dozen women died from the unhygienic conditions, and …

Violent population control continues in China

Contrary to recent reports, China’s population control policy still systematically enforces a policy of coerced abortion, sterilization, and child abandonment. The propaganda, coercion, and violence used by the Chinese Family Planning police continues to violate the rights of Chinese women, men, and their unborn children. In November 2013, the Chinese government changed the regulations to the policy: couples in which both persons are only children are eligible to apply for a second-birth permit. Media coverage …
