Egyptian Government Pushes for Population Control

https://www.pop.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/WB_Egypt_pushes_pop_control.mp3 The Egyptian Government has long implemented programs to encourage smaller families and birth control usage. But far more intrusive population control policies—including a two-child cap for welfare recipients and a proposed incentive scheme for one-child families—may soon be introduced by the government if certain Egyptian lawmakers get their way. In the name of fiscal austerity, she wants us to embark upon a population control program here at home to drive down the birth rate. How else can one understand her desire to add hundreds of millions of dollars of “family planning” spending to the stimulus package under discussion in the Congress? …

Part 3. The Chinese Model

Note: The following is excerpted from Steven Mosher’s book, Population Control—Real Costs, Illusory Benefits. We have had sufficient experience now with population programs to realize that they can easily become a vehicle for elite pressure on the poor. I fear that the elevation to legitimacy of “beyond voluntary family planning” measures lends itself to precisely such pressure. … Of course one might claim that such measures are in the ‘ultimate’ interest of the poor, but …
